NATO Talks with Russia: A Step in the Right Direction

NATO foreign ministers have made a move to resume formal talks with Russia, after severing them over the short Russo-Georgian War last year. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is pushing for a new relationship with Russia. The Bush administration had suspended talks with Moscow.

I think this is a positive move (as long as Clinton keeps her big trap shut through most of the meetings). Russia could prove itself a useful ally, and there is no reason to alienate that country. Further, any victory for democracy and diplomacy there should reduce the likelihood of its plunge back into Socialism and our own foray into those waters. An alliance with Russia, however tentative, could push China (and then other communist countries) toward true democracy.

I would love to see Russia join NATO and especially NAFTA. That would be a step away from war and toward a lasting peace.
