Olympic History

The French were poised to dominate the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay tonight. They even said their team was selected to "smash" Michael Phelps and his American teammates. Unfortunately for them, they underestimated the whole American team. Phelps started things off and led the pack, then each American kept decent pace with the French and Australians. In the middle of the last 100 meters, however, it appeared that the French had the competition in the bag, with their man a whole meter ahead. Yet Jason Lezak managed to stoke the engines and pull ahead in the last third of a lap, beating out the French team.

The following picture, courtesy of Yahoo Sports, shows Michael Phelps's reaction. His enthusiasm is certainly shared! The American team have set both Olympic and world time records with this swim. Well done, men!
