Interesting Insects and Arachnids

I took a few pictures of different insects and spiders while I was in Mississippi.

a friend joined me for a nap. This is a bush katydid.


Here is a silver argiope in its web. This is related to, but much smaller than, the black and yellow argiope which I photographed in Louisville last summer (see my entry from June 13, 2007).

Here's a close-up (thanks Matt).

This strange little spider is called a spiny orb-weaver. Its back looks like an old-style hockey mask.

Here is a very large and furry jumping spider. his body was about the size of a nickle. He was watching me and ran only when the flash went-off.
