On the Verge of Another Cold War?

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, made some rather disconcerting statements today. He warned the United States that we should abandon a plan for enlarging our missile defense shield in Eastern Europe. Putin views the shield as a threat to his nation's security. Also, he has shown interest in pulling out of a treaty made with the U.S. in 1987 limiting mid-range nuclear arms. He said that either the treaty must become universal (pertaining to all nuclear powers in Europe) or he would pull out of the treaty. Remember also that the Russians were flying large-scale bomber drills off the coast of Alaska a few weeks back. Relations with Russia are cooling rapidly.

It is no secret that I distrust Putin. I see a little of the old-school Russian dictator in him. He also is trying to recapture the glory and might of Russia. I have no problem with a powerful Russia, but threats and posturing are not the way to get there. What I would like to see is interest on Russia's part for increased trade and open dialogue with the Western nations. A step away from Iran and China wouldn't hurt either.
